How Working Out Loud Sparks Your Next Media Idea
Linda Reed-Enever

As business owners, we often get so caught up in doing the work that we forget to talk about it. We quietly tick off goals, launch new things, and support clients, but when it comes to sharing that journey? Crickets.

Here’s the thing: if no one knows what you’re up to, they can’t support it. And the media can’t share it.

Enter one of my favourite visibility tips: Work Out Loud.

Originally coined by author John Stepper, “Working Out Loud” means actively talking about what you’re doing as you’re doing it, not just when it’s all polished and done. And it’s just as powerful in the PR world as it is in teams or workplaces.

When you “work out loud” with intention, it sparks media ideas, attracts community support, and helps your audience feel more connected to your journey. Let’s explore how you can use this to uncover your next media release — and show up with purpose.

What does ‘Working Out Loud’ look like?

Working out loud is all about those behind-the-scenes sneak peeks as well as celebrating milestones, and sharing the small wins before, during, and after they happen. It’s letting people in.

This is visibility in action and the media loves it because it makes your story feel real and timely.

So next time you find yourself thinking, “What do I have to say right now?” — consider working out loud with one of these media-friendly prompts:

8 Newsworthy Moments You Might Be Overlooking

  • You’re launching something new

Are you rolling out a new service, product, course or event? Tell your audience why it matters, who it helps and how it came to life. This is a classic PR angle and the earlier you share the journey, the more interest you can build.

  • You’ve won (or been nominated for) an award

Award seasons happen year-round, and even being shortlisted is a credibility booster. Share your story behind the win and let people celebrate with you. Then amplify by showcasing what else you offer.

  • You’re hosting an event or attending one

Whether it’s a breakfast networking session or a full-day workshop, events are a fantastic opportunity to invite media, capture content, and create social buzz. Journalists especially love community stories, so don’t keep them a secret.

  • You’re part of the visitor economy

If you’re in travel, tourism or hospitality, now’s the time to build storytelling into your visibility plan. Curate a mini media tour, create reels, or offer sneak peeks. Media outlets love a visual story.

  • You’ve got a great backstory

Business origin stories are pure media gold. If your journey has had twists and turns (and let’s face it, most do), it’s worth sharing. Someone out there needs to hear it.

  • Your team is kicking goals

Celebrate your people! From new hires to long-service milestones or even personal wins, this makes your business human and builds internal pride.

  • You’ve got timely advice

When your industry hits a peak season, position yourself as a helpful voice. What tips can you share with clients or consumers to make their lives easier? This also gives journalists a ready-made angle to pick up.

  • You’re educating or updating

Launched a new process? Changed how you work? Have a unique approach? Share it. Educational content builds authority and trust and media outlets are always looking for experts to explain trends.

Start Small, Show Up Often

The key to ‘Working Out Loud’ isn’t perfection. It’s consistency. Don’t wait for the big reveal. Share your journey as it happens and let people grow with you.

And remember, visibility takes practise. The more you show up, the more opportunities you’ll find.

So… what could you ‘work out loud’ on today? That might just be your next release idea.
