PR Myths Busted: What Every Business Owner Needs to Know
Linda Reed-Enever

Public Relations; two words that either excite business owners or send them running for the hills.

The truth is, PR isn’t as complicated or out of reach as people think. It’s not just for big brands or those with massive budgets. Smart, intentional PR is one of the most powerful tools small businesses can use to build trust, grow visibility, and create opportunities.

So let’s bust some of the most common PR myths and get to the truth about how it actually works.

Myth 1: PR is only for big businesses

One of the biggest myths I hear is that PR is reserved for big companies with teams of publicists. Not true.

PR is for any business owner who wants to be seen, heard, and remembered. If you’ve got expertise, a story, or a message that could help others, you’re PR-ready.

Small businesses can make a big impact with the right strategy, which is exactly what I share in My Book of PR Tips. It’s all about helping you DIY your media presence in a way that makes sense for your business.

Myth 2: You have to be constantly “newsworthy”

You don’t need to win awards or launch something new every week to be featured in the media.

Journalists are looking for relatable stories, expert insights, and unique perspectives. Your business journey, your challenges, even your “why”—those are all PR opportunities. The key is knowing how to pitch them in a way that matters to the audience.

Need help finding your angle? That’s exactly why I created the PR Cues Deck. It’s full of prompts designed to help you uncover stories that are media-friendly and meaningful.

Myth 3: PR is just about media coverage

Media coverage is great—but PR is much bigger than that.

It’s about building your authority, creating strategic connections, and positioning yourself as the go-to expert in your space. That might mean podcast interviews, speaking opportunities, awards, collaborations, or guest features.

PR helps you stay top of mind. It builds trust over time. And it positions your brand to be taken seriously.

Myth 4: You can’t do your own PR

This one needs to be debunked once and for all: you absolutely can do your own PR.

You don’t need to hire an agency to start building your presence. What you need is clarity on your message, consistency in your approach, and support when you need it.

That’s where Consult with Me comes in. You send me your questions—whether it’s about a pitch, your media bio, or how to approach an opportunity—and I reply with strategic advice, tailored to your situation.

It’s PR support, on your schedule.

Myth 5: PR should deliver instant results

Here’s the thing: PR isn’t a quick win. It’s a long game.

The podcast interview you record today might lead to a collaboration in three months. That guest article might be read by your next client. PR works when you work it consistently and strategically.

The more often you show up, the more opportunities come your way.

Final Word: PR Is About Presence, Not Perfection

You don’t need to be perfect, polished, or famous to get good PR. You just need to be clear with your message and consistent in sharing it.

Want to get started?

PR is powerful—and it’s more accessible than you think.
